Six weeks ago I had surgery to remove the metalwork from my arm. The continued lack of movement and pain meant that the surgeon decided that it was worth removing the metal to see if they helped progress. It’s still early days, I’m still sore from the surgery but am back working with the physio to see if we can get more range of movement in the joint. It is hard to believe that in a few weeks it will have been one year since the accident.
In more positive news my training plan for the London Marathon in April this year is now underway. I’m decided that whatever happens (dangerous words!) I am running a marathon this year and am looking for an event later in the year to sign up for “just in case” or perhaps in addition to London.
I had to take nearly four weeks off after the recent surgery, and as with my extended lay off after the original accident I find that running distance isn’t an issue after a break but my speed suffers. So I am making sure to build in interval sessions which work well for me to increase my pace. I would love to get a sub-two hour half in this year as well. My chip time for the Ealing Half last October was 2 hours 1 minute and 40 seconds, so under 2 hours is definitely achievable.
We’re about to relocate to Bristol, so I need to make sure I find a new running club and gym. The support of people at my club in Maidenhead, and my trainer at the gym has been so valuable over the last year as I’ve recovered. I’m going to miss them.
So my fitness goals for 2014 are:
- To get at least another 20 degrees of range of movement in my elbow, which would enable most things I want to do
- To run at least one full marathon
- To run a sub 2 hour half
- To get back on a bike (I’m still not allowed to cycle, but hopefully by the summer!)
- To start doing yoga and Pilates regularly again (at least one session, ideally 2 per week)
- To find a new running club and gym in Bristol
