I returned to England on Wednesday from the wonderful Smashing Conference in Freiburg, Germany. Vitaly, Marc and the whole Smashing Magazine team did an amazing job running the first of what I hope will be many Smashing Conferences. As an example of the care and attention given to the whole conference, take a look at … We need to talk about content management
Via comments made by some of our Perchers on Twitter I discovered this post by EllisLab. One of my main tips to people wanting to launch a product is “talk to people on Twitter”, and so here are some thoughts for other product developers as to how we use Twitter for Perch and how important … The importance of social media for product developers
I agree with some of what Zach Inglis says in his post, Working on a few things in your bedroom, doesn’t make you an expert! I started to reply on Twitter then realized that I would write 40 Tweets to say what would be better written up as a post. I have definitely seen a … Doing, speaking and (not) being an internet celebrity
First, a disclaimer. Emma Boulton at Five Simple Steps sent me a copy of A Practical Guide to Web App Success and asked if I would read it and maybe write a review, given that I often write about business issues. I love reading business books, so was very happy to do so. The thoughts … Book Review: A Practical Guide to Web App Success
It is a week on from our launch of Perch 2, the new version of our really little content management system. Last year I was contacted by the organisers of the Front Trends conference in Poland to ask if I would be willing to speak at the conference, and to speak about “Web Standards”. Although I wasn’t completely sure on the subject of my talk, I said yes and then started to think about what would … Front Trends 2012
When we launched Perch, almost three years ago, we had to learn a lot of things and quickly. Despite having a successful services business in edgeofmyseat.com we had never launched a product. In many ways it was like setting up in business all over again, and we’ve learned a lot along the way. We’re not … A community for the bootstrappers
We’re in a really exciting time for front-end web development. Our modern browsers are excellent in terms of their standard support for CSS, and new features are becoming usable far more rapidly than I can ever remember. This situation is exactly what we asked for in the early days of the Web Standards movement. That … Stop solving problems you don’t yet have
As of December 2013, we handed over the Greenbelt website to Greenbelt Festivals and are not now involved with the project. Earlier this week edgeofmyseat.com (that is to say Drew and I) launched the all-new Greenbelt website. The site was designed by Wilf Whitty of Ratiotype, and brings the strong visual identity that he has … Responsibly Responsive: developing the Greenbelt website
