Announcing The Profitable Side Project Handbook

I’m self-publishing an e-book based on the things we have learned taking our product Perch from side project to our main business.

Unfashionably profitable

Why using the latest technology and chasing coverage in the tech press or mentions from influencers might not be the path to profitability that you think. I write about how we are “unfashionably profitable”.

Review of Snappy - Customer Service Simplified

A post reviewing the new support system Snappy, explaining how we are using it to stop our pre-sales inbox descending into chaos at Perch.

Mailing list

Last week I popped a mailing list signup into the sidebar of this site. This list will be where I share some of that research and work. Expect one email a week with some carefully curated resources along with my commentary on them.

I do not wish to be "reached out" to

A post about having confidence to write in your own voice, speaking to your customers as you would a friend and avoiding the dreaded business speak.

Nothing to fall back on

My sixteen year old daughter has left school. She isn’t taking A Levels. In September she will begin a course at a top dance college, to even get a place there is a huge achievement for her, I’m hugely proud as she has worked so, so hard for it.

I tell people of her plans and they react in horror, “no A Levels? What will she fall back on?”

The Bootstrapped Discuss forums

In April 2012 I pondered the need for somewhere for people like us, people who are running businesses online but are not chasing investment or a buy out, in my post A Community for the Bootstrappers. I didn’t take those thoughts further as I didn’t want to become list-mother to a barely populated community, and I wasn’t sure how many other people were thinking along the same lines.

Book Review: Design Evolution

This is a lovely little book, written as advice from one business owner to another. Even as the owner of a four year old product there were things in the book that gave me new ideas to implement. It should be essential reading for anyone about to launch or with a newly launched product.

Shipping your product - the workshop

I’m very excited to be announcing my new workshop – Shipping Your Product: Create an action plan for launch day and beyond to be presented at Future of Web Apps in London in October.
